Summer - Lighthouses!

Free Lighthouse Tours on Plum Island Beach, Massachusetts
Books We Love:
The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge
Lighthouse Craft Tutorial

WOW - what a lighthouse kind of day! I saw the headline on The Town Common newspaper this morning and the next thing I knew I was making a lighthouse craft on the deck with my daughter - funny how things just happen.

Do you live on the North Shore? How about visiting a working lighthouse and getting to go into it with your whole family (even dogs are welcome)? Well this Saturday, August 3rd the Plum Island Lighthouse offers free tours. There will also be tours from 1-4 on 8/25, 9/15, and 10/6. For the entire article click here.

The Town Common is the largest independent newspaper serving the North Shore of Massachusetts and coastal New Hampshire (and it's free!) - check them out for 'goings on' in the area.

Our family loves visiting lighthouses - it all started when we were staying at a friends beach house and saw this book on their shelf, The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge by Hildegarde Swift and Lynd Ward. We read it to the kids that night as a bedtime story and my husband read the book jacket and said "I know where this is in New York - we should check it out." So we did!

It was a great day and when we had the pictures developed (yes it was before our digital life) we pasted them into the our own book as a keepsake.
The illustrations in the this book are fantastic and bring me back to being a kid myself. The book was published in 1942 and our local bookstore ordered us a copy. Amazon also now carries it in both paperback and hardcover - see here.
So in the spirit of lighthouses my daughter and I collected some supplies from around the house and got to making one. Here is the video to show you how.
Supplies you'll need:
- colored party cup
- smaller clear cup
- battery operated tea light
- black paper
- white electrical tape
- scissors, glue stick & imagination
