Throwback Thursday - Halloween 1976

Here I am in my 'Tin Man' costume - 1976. My father made it out of cardboard, tape, staples and I'm pretty certain, spray paint that had lead in it.

Tin Man 1976 - Homemade Costume
Mom pulled a paper heart from her Valentines decorations and some yarn - instant heart! They made my costume with love...
.and as hard as it was to walk in the thing (not to mention the chafing under the arms and the fact I couldn't see or enter the doughnut eating contest with my 'head' on) I cherish the memory of them making a costume for me.

That's right - doughnut eating contest at the church costume party
I never appreciated the homemade costume like I do today. Back then I wanted the boxed version with the plastic mask and vinyl (highly flammable) suit - I eventually got one of those - you'll have to wait for another throwback day to see it though!
