A Nautical Sign of Spring?

This winter has brought so many storms to us – the waterfront has had some tremendous high tides and unfortunately for our local shore line, quite a bit of erosion.
The night before the last storm our family too a walk down to the river – here is what the tide brought in – horseshoe crab molts.

Bucket of Horseshoe Crab Molts

Horseshoe crabs have always been a signal to me that it is time to put the boat in the water and get ready for the summer months ahead. I don’t expect to see a horseshoe crab until sometime in May but was thrilled to find these molts washed up with the debris – it means they are out there and that we’ll see them soon as the weather warms.

These are relatively small ones - all found washed up in debris.
